Ongoing help and support
The 2009 Coaching Calendars are a great way to get you started on your coaching journey. They give you the background information to not only help you understand why you do things the way you do-even though you it may not bring about the result you desire- but also how to go about putting into place the practical steps and exercises to start to do things differently and more effectively.
Let me give you an example. Think about a time in your life when something happened where you felt you had little or no control over the situation; falling out with a friend, feeling unfairly treated at work or in a relationship. Ring any bells? You may have felt like a victim without any power to change the status quo. This may have made you angry, sad and probably disempowered. You may have seen the event itself as the upsetting thing-what was done or said to you. However it is usually the way you think about events that causes upset rather than the event itself. So now I'd like you to think about what happened to you in a new light.
Before where you may have felt sorry for yourself, aggrieved at being misunderstood or angry with someone but without telling them, let's turn this around. Imagine yourself adopting a curious attitude to what happened; ask the other person what they feel, and tell them how you feel. Rather than just staying quiet and feeling sorry for yourself, feel empowered. Don't assume you know what another person is thinking without asking them. Being proactive will empower you, whereas keeping quiet and doing nothing makes you feel powerless. Whatever the outcome you will have a clearer picture of the situation and a resolution, and the chances are a positive one!
